L’antico paese medievale di Civitella in Val di Chiana, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, fu teatro, insieme alle frazioni di Cornia e di Gebbia, di una tremenda strage nazifascista. Tutto il territorio colpito fu messo a ferro e fuoco. Persero la vita 176 civili inermi.
Per non dimenticare questo tragico e doloroso evento che sconvolse l’intera comunità e cambiò tanti aspetti della vita quotidiana e quindi ricordare alle generazioni future gli errori e gli orrori di ogni guerra, con la speranza di diffondere un messaggio di pace, il Comitato Organizzatore, in collaborazione con la popolazione e l’Amministrazione Comunale, ha allestito nel centro di Civitella, in Piazza Martiri, una “Sala della Memoria”, inaugurata nel 2004, sessantesimo dell’eccidio.
In questa sala sono esposti alcuni reperti rinvenuti sulle vittime, numerose fotografie del paese prima e dopo la distruzione, documenti di archivio, ricerche storiche, testimonianze, inchieste giudiziarie, libri, videocassette registrate nel corso degli anni e vari residuati bellici.

Il Comitato per la memoria, nel salutare tutti i visitatori, li invita, nel rispetto del luogo, a mettere la propria firma e, se ritenuto opportuno, anche le proprie riflessioni nell’apposito registro dove, il 7 Ottobre 2004, ha firmato anche il Presidente della Repubblica Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in visita al paese di Civitella per rendere un doveroso omaggio alle vittime della guerra in Provincia di Arezzo.

During the second world war, in Civitella Val di Chiana, Cornia and Gebbia there was a terrible nazi-nascist massacre. All this area was hit and destroyed. 176 unarmed people were killed.
In order not to forget this tragic and sad event, which changed the daily life of this people, the Organizing Committee with population and local government has organized a ”Memory Room”. They want to remember the mistakes and the horrors of all wars to the future generations with the hope to propagate a peace message. The Memory Room is in the centre of Civitella Val di Chiana , in Piazza Matteotti and it was opened in 2004 to celebrate the 60th anniversary from the massacre.
In this Room you can see some exhibits from the victims, a lot of photos of the little town before and after destruction, some archives documents, historical researches, evidences, judicial inquires, books, videos recorded during years and some war remains.

The Memory Committee asks to all visitors to respect the place and sign the register, and if you want, you can write your reflections. The Presidente della Repubblica Carlo Azelio Ciampi signed the register too on 7 October 2004 during his visit to Civitella to pay the right homage to the war victims in Arezzo province.
